Irezumi Cocoa Package Design
I created a food brand called Irezumi Cocoa that displays chocolate truffles, chocolate bars, and tea infused with chocolate. Each product also contains one of three main ingredients: orange, ginger, and wasabi. For the design of the packaging I was inspired by traditional Japanese tattoos and artwork. The Japanese term “Irezumi” comes from the name for the term for decorating one’s body with mythical beasts, flowers, leaves, and other images from stories, myths, and tales.
Design Process
Inspired by the use of watercolor when used to create tattoo flash sheets along with trying to create the look of traditional Japanese art I tried to recreate that effect digitally using certain brushes and blending methods on Procreate.
Each product had its own character to go with it pulled from popular animals in Japanese culture.
For the label of the brand logo “Irezumi Cocoa” I was inspired by Japanese Hanko stamps and wanted to recreate that look. I wanted the style of the packaging to feel traditional with a modern touch to it.
For each of the three flavors I made sure to incorporate an illustration of the ingredient whether it was wasabi, ginger, or orange.
